The world of social media is evolving, and Bluesky is at the forefront of a shift toward decentralization. Unlike traditional social networks like Twitter (X), Facebook, or Instagram, which are controlled by single companies, Bluesky is built on the Authenticated Transfer Protocol (AT Protocol). This new foundation makes it more like email or website domains—where users and businesses have greater control over their presence, content, and brand identity.
What Makes Bluesky Different from Other Social Networks?
1. Decentralization & Interoperability
Most social networks are walled gardens—once you’re on a platform, your identity and content are tied to that service. If the platform shuts down or changes its rules, your audience and content could be lost.
Bluesky’s AT Protocol allows multiple services to interconnect while keeping user identities portable. This means your handle, posts, and followers aren’t locked into Bluesky itself. If a better service emerges that also supports AT Protocol, you can take your identity and audience with you.
2. User-Owned Identity (Handles as Domains)
With Bluesky, businesses and individuals can verify their handle using their own domain name. Instead of using @yourbrand.bsky.social, you can set your handle to @yourbrand.com, reinforcing your ownership over your brand’s identity.
This provides a significant advantage for businesses. On most platforms, your username is subject to availability and platform policies. On Bluesky, as long as you own your domain, you control your name—just like with your website.
3. Resilience to External Pressures
Traditional social networks are controlled by a single entity that can moderate or remove content, ban users, or shut down services. While moderation is important, central control means businesses can be at the mercy of a company’s policies and decisions.
Bluesky’s decentralized approach means:
- Your presence isn’t subject to the whims of a single company.
- If Bluesky’s main service ever goes down, alternative servers using the AT Protocol can continue operating.
- No single entity can “deplatform” you without recourse.
This makes it more resilient against sudden policy shifts or external interference.
Why This Matters for Small Businesses
1. Own Your Brand Identity Online
By setting your Bluesky handle to your actual domain (@yourbrand.com), you reinforce your brand identity across platforms. Customers will recognize your official presence immediately.
2. More Control Over Your Content
Unlike centralized social platforms, where content policies and algorithms dictate reach and visibility, decentralized networks give businesses more control. You aren’t at the mercy of a social media algorithm deciding what your audience sees.
3. Future-Proofing Against Platform Changes
Social networks rise and fall. Bluesky’s decentralized nature means you can take your social identity with you if you ever need to switch to a different service built on AT Protocol.
How to Get Started with Bluesky & Verify Your Domain
If you want to claim your business’s domain as your handle on Bluesky, you need to set up an AT Protocol verification record. This process involves:
- Create an account at bsky.app if you don’t already have one.
- Choose a temporary handle during sign up.
- This will be reserved on bsky.social but we’ll change it soon.
- Set a TXT record on your domain DNS to verify ownership
- Head to Settings > Account > Handle
- Select “I have my own domain”
- Bluesky provides a TXT record that you add to your domain’s DNS settings. This verifies that you own the domain.
Once verified, your handle will change from @yourbrand.bsky.social to @yourbrand.com.
